How are drywall sheets made

Drywall!

Drywall is better known as plasterboard in the United Kingdom and gypsum sheets to us Canadians. This product has hundreds of uses around your house, but there are distinct differences in these names when you start looking it up.

Plasterboard is usually made with sand, water and cement or lime, whereas gypsum boards contain no sand at all. Instead a mineral called calcium sulphate hemihydrate is used. There are also different grades available for both of them that can affect how they look and feel.

Canada's Gypsum Association have created a grading system for their drywall products so each sheet can be identified by its specific density and price point. One example of their grading goes from one being the lowest quality, to three being the highest quality. One of the most common grades, 1/2" sheetrock, is often used for general construction purposes or on ceilings. It is also used as a fire resistant material by Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

The manufacturing process for gypsum boards starts with mining calcium sulphate ore underground. This material is then heated until it becomes a powder that looks similar to talcum powder. Next water is added to create a slurry that can be pushed through large machines called presses or extruders into thin sheets up to 20 feet in length! These are then cut down into manageable sizes of drywall board of various widths and thicknesses depending on their use. Some types even have grooves in them to add insulation.

The boards are then stacked onto huge pallets and wrapped with large plastic sheets to protect them from damage while being transported around the world. Because gypsum sheet products have a high level of resistance to moisture, pests and fire, they can be shipped by air or ocean freighter to your local drywall contractor in Canada.
